Heathkit SB-230 Amplifier

The Heathkit SB-230 is a single tube amplifier capable of putting out 600 watts using a single 8873 tube. As with all other Heathkit products this amp is built like a tank. My amplifier has been modified to be keyed directly from solid state HF transcievers. Stock, this amplifier came without any fans. My amplifier has been modified with some cooling to makes things last. I have a blower fan aimed directly at the tube, and a fan attached to the heatsink on the rear of the amp. It runs nice a cool even with full duty cycle digital modes such as RTTY. The downfall to this amp is the tubes that it uses. They are VERY expensive for what you get for power output. A new tube can cost you more than you might have paid for the amplifier. They range from $500 - $800. With a little luck my tube will last me until I get a different amp with a low cost tube.
